The Old Quarter of Hanoi is located in Hoan Kiem district and covers an area of approximately 100 hectares. This area includes 76 streets, belonging to 10 wards: Hang Dao, Hang Bac, Hang Buom, Hang Bo, Hang Bong, Hang Gai, Hang Ma, Dong Xuan, Cua Dong and Ly Thai To.
When was the Hanoi Old Quarter formed?
The area became a bustling residential area since the Ly – Tran dynasty and is located east of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, adjacent to the Red River. As early as the time of the Le dynasty, Nguyen Trai mentioned the names of some craft villages here in the book “Du Dia Chi”.
Phu Phung Thien was established during the Le dynasty, including two districts of Vinh Thuan and Tho Xuong, and this area was located in the four Tuc districts of Tho Xuong, namely Tien Tuc, Hau Tuc, Ta Tuc, and Huu Tuc. Outside the area was the Dai La city wall with many gates.

In the time of the Le dynasty, this area had some ponds, and the most notable one was Thai Cuc Pond. The To Lich River connected with the city moat, ponds, and also flowed into Hoan Kiem Lake and the Red River, which were also located in this area. In the late 19th century, these rivers and lakes were filled in, however, traces of them are still preserved through place names such as Ha Khau, Giang Khau, Cau Go and Cau Dong.
During the Ly and Tran dynasties, people from the surrounding villages in the North Delta converged on this area to settle, forming the most densely populated neighborhood in the capital. By the time of the Le dynasty, overseas Chinese communities gradually appeared and expanded their own “Tàu” (Chinese) neighborhoods.
During the French colonial period, the lakes were filled in and the area was renovated, attracting Indian and French traders to do business here. Two small markets were cleared to make way for the Dong Xuan Market, and the tram line from Hoan Kiem Lake to Thuy Khue also passed through this area.
Today, it is still the busiest trading area in Hanoi and has been opened to pedestrian streets. Landmarks such as Ha Khau, Giang Khau, Cau Go, and Cau Dong still bear traces of the previous lakes and rivers.
